InterVarsity is an evangelical campus mission serving more than 35,000 students and faculty on more than 560 college and university campuses nationwide. Incorporated in 1941, InterVarsity has a rich tradition of campus witness, thoughtful discipleship, and a concern for world missions.

The Great Lakes East Region of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship U.S.A. encompasses Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and western Maryland and Pennsylvania.

As an organization, InterVarsity desires to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed and world changers developed. InterVarsity does this by pursuing its purpose to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty that follow Jesus as Savior and Lord, growing in love for God, God's word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in the world. To this end, the Area Director will champion the InterVarsity vision within Washtenaw County, Michigan and will have immediate opportunities for broad influence and for strategic advancement to the glory of God. The Area Director will oversee the work of staff, volunteers and students on the campuses of Washtenaw County and beyond as opportunity arises.


The Opportunity

Overall, the work encompasses a variety of campuses and contextualized ministries, so the opportunities for influence are significant, while flexibility and adaptability are crucial.

Identified strengths of the area include a highly connected and functioning staff team; strong commitment to student leadership indicated by production of numerous staff members; presence of supportive churches and a diversity of campuses, students and ministries.

To be most effective, the Area Director in Washtenaw County will be the one who energetically identifies, communicates and motivates others to embrace and implement a vision for growth. The ideal candidate will provide direction, recruit, train and mobilize staff to use their strengths in developing and growing their particular ministries qualitatively and quantitatively, while building an atmosphere of accountability. They will be the face of the area internally with staff and volunteers, within the region and to constituents including alumni, donors and the broader Christian community.

Currently, InterVarsity is present on the following campuses with the following chapters:

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (multiethnic, Asian-American, international student and emerging fraternity and sorority chapters)

Eastern Michigan University

Washtenaw Community College


Candidate Criteria

In order to serve these ministries and develop new initiatives, the qualified candidate will be demonstrably motivated and gifted to:

· Maintain team unity and facilitate growth across a fairly wide demographic expanse

· Coach and shepherd staff professionally and personally

· Support, manage and hold staff accountable through effective communication

· Assist in developing funding streams for current and prospective staff

· Hire and maintain the right staff to sustain the current work, serve more campus communities and reach the area's potential

· Be effective at understanding and communicating at a fairly well developed theological and academic level

· Develop and sustain networks among churches, businesses, organizations and individuals

Education: Bachelor degree required; seminary or graduate degree preferred.

Location: Ideally within Washtenaw County


Where is this individual today?

It is possible that the right candidate for this opportunity is currently serving in one of a variety
of settings:· He or she could be a current staff person or pastor at a church that is passionate about reaching the emerging generation on college campuses and the faculty members that teach them.

· This person may currently be an effective staff member of a faith based organization looking for their next ministry challenge.

· They may be a faculty member or administrator at an academic institution and be open to considering pursing ministry leadership as their primary role for a number of years or longer.

· The next Area Director of Washtenaw County might also be serving in a strategic leadership position in the for-profit world but is open to God's calling to serve His
kingdom and mission in new ways.
